Getting to Auckland

Driving:

Auckland is easy to reach by car, with scenic routes connecting it to cities all over New Zealand.

  • From Wellington, the drive is approximately 8 hours north via State Highway 1 (SH1).

  • From Hamilton, it is about 1.5 to 2 hours via SH1.

  • From Rotorua, the journey takes approximately 3 hours via SH5 and SH1.

  • From Whangārei, head south on SH1 for around 2.5 hours to reach Auckland.​​

Flying to Auckland:

Auckland Airport (AKL) is New Zealand’s largest and busiest airport, with frequent domestic flights from all over the country. It is located approximately 25 minutes south of the city centre, depending on traffic conditions.

Getting from Auckland Airport to the City

  • By taxi or rideshare: Taxis, Uber, and Ola are available outside the terminal. Fares typically range from $40 to $70 depending on the time of day and traffic.

  • By shuttle: Shared shuttle vans are a cost-effective option and can drop you directly at your accommodation.

  • By public transport:

    • AirportLink connects the airport to Puhinui Station, where you can transfer to a train into the city. Allow approximately 45 to 60 minutes in total.

    • SkyBus operates express services between the airport and Auckland’s central business district. This service offers a comfortable ride with complimentary Wi-Fi onboard.

    • Skydrive provides direct coach services from the airport to Auckland CBD and other key destinations across the region.

  • Rental cars: Several rental car companies operate from the airport for those planning to explore beyond the city.
